Activity details
Description of the initiative
This project is designed to provide countries with scientific and technical capacity for biosafety assessment and regulation in order for them to be able to implement the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety nationally. Specifically, capacities are provided for countries to conduct scientific risk assessment and risk management, and address other technical biosafety regulation needs.

Regional level activities
*Conduct research in the following: (1) Bioethics and risk governance; (2) Feeding experiments involving some potential risk factors for GM (genetically modified) food; (3) GMOs in aquatic ecosystems: pioneering ecological food-web model experiments; (4) Poxviruses in Norway: Biodiversity, characteristics and recombinations between naturally occurring and genetically engineered. For more information see http://www.genok.org/english/view_forskning.asp

*Produce a variety of publications. See http://www.genok.org/english/lesartikkel.asp?article_id=758&id2=SX3z0B9eI2MRMvGObzGiCRprz

*Offer courses. See http://www.genok.org/english/view_kurs.asp
Objective and main expected outcomes or lesson learned
Goals
*Provide an International annual 2-week course for policy makers, regulators, scientists and NGOs/civil society representatives from the developing countries": Holistic Foundations for Assessment and Regulation of Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms".

*Create the Biosafety Assesment Tool (BAT): a free-to-the-public online resource, designed as a practical tool for the risk assessment of GMO applications for food, feed, medicine or environmental release. See http://www.inbi.canterbury.ac.nz/BAT.shtml

*Conduct a book/CD-ROM project: "Foundations of Gene Ecology and Holistic Approaches to Risk Assessment of Genetic Engineering".

*Provide a Master of Science studies with majors in Gene Ecology and Holistic GE/GMO Risk Assessment.

Objectives
To increase levels of expertise in environmental fields, health and risk assessment pertaining to gene modification and the use of genetically modified organisms.

Main outcomes
*Online course: Holistic Foundations for Assessment and Regulation of Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms. See http://www.genok.org/english/lesartikkel.asp?article_id=1412&id2=cghIAJ2gFt5S7EsIMJYsrG5vC

*Completion of the 4th International Biosafety course "Holistic Foundations for Assessment and Regulation of Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms" (2006). See http://www.genok.org/english/lesartikkel.asp?article_id=1393&id2=7278zB7u5HXJ0T6AJe2kpHZ1I
